Clarion-Ledger: Most extreme embezzlement cases by Miss. public officials

Public officials in Mississippi can find themselves the subject of an audit when they misspend public dollars, whether accidentally or with intent to use those funds for personal gain.

Overall, this last fiscal year involved demands by the auditor’s office for some $2.9 million in returned funds. And State Auditor Stacey Pickering pointed out in his report that his office has, so far, recovered $1.5 million in FY14. But that total doesn’t necessarily include demands from the last year.

Instead, there are several ongoing cases from previous years where the public official is still paying restitution. here’s a look at some of the higher profile and costlier offenders, as identified by the auditor’s office.
